 사랑에 관하여On Love

Then said Almitra, "Speak to us of Love."
그러자 알미트라는 "저희에게 사랑에 대해 이야기 해 주십시요" 라고 말하였다.

And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:
그는 그의 고개를 들어 사람들을 바라보며 그들 위로 침묵이 흐를때 큰 목소리로 말했다.

When love beckons to you follow him,
사랑의 빛이 너에게 오면 그를 따르라..

Though his ways are hard and steep.
비록 그 길이 고되고 험할 지라도.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
또한 그의 날개가 그대를 감싸거든 그에게 너를 맡기라.

Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
비록 그 날개끝에 감추인 칼날이 너에게 상처를 줄지라도.

And when he speaks to you believe in him,
그리고 그가 너에게 말하면 그를 믿으라.

Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
비록 그의 목소리가 찬바람이 정원을 휩쓸고 지나가듯 너의 꿈을 산산히 부서지게 하더라도..

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
사랑은 너에게 왕관도 씌워 주지만 너에게 십자가를 지워줄 것이기에. 그는 너를 성장시키기도 할 것이지만 또한 너의 가지를 칠 것이기에.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
그는 너의 높은곳까지 올라 햇볕에 떨고 있는 너의 가장 부드러운 가지를 애무할 것이지만.

So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
또한 그는 너의 뿌리로 내려가 땅에 박혀있는 그것들을 뒤흔들 것이기에.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
옥수수 단처럼 그는 너를 거둬들이고.

He threshes you to make you naked.
너를 타작하여 알몸이 되게 하고

He sifts you to free you from your husks.
껍질속에 있는 너를 자유케 할 것이며.

He grinds you to whiteness.
너를 갈아 희게 할 것이며

He kneads you until you are pliant;
네가 나긋나긋할때까지 반죽할 것이기 때문이다.


And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
그런다음 그는 너를 그의 성서러운 불에 넣어 신의 성스러운 연회에 쓰일 성스러운 빵에 되게 할 것이라.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
사랑은 이 모든것들을 너에게 행하므로 너는 너의 가슴속의 비밀을 깨닫게 되고, 그 비밀들이 생명의 가슴의 한 부분이 되게 할 것이라.

But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
그러나 만약 너의 그 두려움이 사랑의 평화와 사랑의 기쁨만을 이야기 하고자 한다면.

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor, Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
너의 그 알몸을 가리고 사랑의 타작마당을 떠나 웃어도 웃지 않는, 울어도 눈물이 없는 그러한 계절이 없는 세계로 떠나가라.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
사랑은 사랑외에는 주는 것도 받는것도 없으므로..

Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
사랑은 소유하지도 소유당하지도 않는것.

For love is sufficient unto love.
사랑은 사랑만으로 족하기 때문.

When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."
너희가 사랑을 할 때에는 "신이 내 안에 있다"라고 하지 말라, 다만 내가 신 안에 있다. 라고 이야기 하라.

And think not you can direct the course of love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
그리고 너희가 사랑을 주관할 수 있을거라고 생각하지 말라, 사랑이 너희에게 그럴만하다고 생각되면 너희들을 인도할 것이기 때문이다..

Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
사랑은 사랑외에는 욕망함이 없는 것.

But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
그러나 만약 너희가 사랑을 하고 욕망이 있으면 그 욕망으로 하여금 너희의 욕망이 되게 하라.

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
자신의 노래를 밤이되도록 노래하는 녹아 흐르는 시내처럼 되기를!

To know the pain of too much tenderness.
지나친 다정함에서 오는 고통을 알게 되기를..

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
자신의 사랑을 이해함으로서 상처받게 되기를..

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
그리고 기꺼이 그리고 즐겁게 피흘리게 되기를.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
하늘을 나는 마음으로 새벽에 일어나 또 하루를 사랑할 수 있게 된 것을 감사하게 되기를..

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
정오에는 누워서 사랑의 기쁨을 명상하기를...

To return home at eventide with gratitude;
감사하는 마음으로 저녁녁에 집으로 돌아 오기를..

And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.
그런 다음 당신의 마음으로 사랑하는 사람을 위해서 기도 하며, 당신의 입술로 찬미의 노래로 잠들게 되기를......
