국가와 민족에 대해서

And when the forty days and nights were ended,
Almustafa opened the gate that they might come in.
And there came nine men to be with him in the Garden;
three mariners from his own ship; three who had served in the Temple;
and three who had been his comrades
in play when they were but children together.
And these were his disciples.

사십 일의 밤과 낮이 지났을 때,
예언자 알 무스타파는 문을 열고 사람들을 맞이했다.
그러자 그와 함께 있기 위해서 아홉 명의 사람이 왔다.
그 중 세 명은 그의 배의 선원들이었고,
세 명은 사원에서 신을 섬기는 사람이었으며,
나머지 세 명은 그와 함께 어릴 적부터 같이 뛰어 놀았던 친구들이었다.
그리고 그들은 모두 그의 제자들이었다.

And on a morning his disciples sat around him,
and there were distances and remembrances in his eyes.
And that disciple who was called Hafiz said unto him:
"Master, tell us of the city of Orphalese,
and of that land wherein you tarried those twelve years."

그리고 아침이 오자 그의 제자들은 그의 주위에 둘러앉았고,
그의 눈에는 아득한 회상의 빛이 감돌고 있었다.
그 때 하피즈라 불리는 그의 제자중 한 사람이 그에게 물었다.

And Almustafa was silent,
and he looked away towards the hills and toward the vast ether,
and there was a battle in his silence.

Then he said:
"My friends and my road-fellows, pity the nation
that is full of beliefs and empty of religion.

잠시 후 그가 말했다.

"내 친구들이여, 그리고 나의 길동무들이여,
믿음들로만 가득하고 신앙이 없는 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.

"Pity the nation that wears a cloth it does not weave,
eats a bread it does not harvest,
and drinks a wine that flows not from its own winepress.
"Pity the nation that acclaims the bully as hero,
and that deems the glittering conqueror bountiful.
"Pity the nation that despises a passion in its dream,
yet submits in its awakening.

"자신들이 힘들여 짜지도 않은 옷을 입고 다니며,
자신들이 땀흘려 거두어들이지 않은 곡식으로 만든 빵을 먹고,
자신들이 수확하여 만들지 않은 포도주를 마시는 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.

"자칭 영웅이라고 하면서
약한 자들을 착취하는 난폭한 이에게 갈채를 보내고,
겉만 번지르르한 정복자들을
관대하다고 생각하고 있는 민족들을 불쌍히 여기십시오.

"Pity the nation that raises not its voice
save when it walks in a funeral, boasts not except among its ruins,
and will rebel not save when its neck
is laid between the sword and the block.

"자신들의 이상(理想)속에서는 욕정을 경멸하면서도
현실 속에서는 욕정에 굴복하는 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.

"죽음이 자신들의 눈앞에 닥치기 전까지는
절대로 자기 자신들의 목소리를 높이지 않으며,
자신들이 파멸에 이르기 전까지는 큰 소리를 내지 않으며,
자신들의 목이 단두대 칼날 사이에 놓이기 전까지는
저항하지 않는 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.

"Pity the nation whose statesman is a fox,
whose philosopher is a juggle,
and whose art is the art of patching and mimicking.
"Pity the nation that welcomes its new ruler with trumpetings,
and farewells him with hootings,
only to welcome another with trumpetings again.

"나라의 정치가는 여우처럼 교활하며,
철학자들은 이리저리 말을 바꾸는 요술쟁이이며,
예술가들은 이리저리 기운 헝겊조각과 모조품들로
예술행위를 하는 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.

"나팔을 불어대며 자신들의 새로운 지배자를 열렬히 환영하다가,
다시 한번 나팔을 불며 환호하기 위하여,
야유하며 그 지배자와 작별을 고하고,
또 다른 지배자를 환호하며 맞아들이는 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.

"Pity the nation whose sages are dumb with years
and whose strong men are yet in the cradle.
"Pity the nation divided into fragments,
each fragment deeming itself a nation."

"슬기롭고 현명한 사람들은
오래전부터 벙어리와 다름없이 말문을 닫고있고,
오직 힘을 가진 강한 자들만이
처음부터 끝까지 살아남는 그 나라의 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.

"산산조각으로 부서지고 나뉘어져서,
각자가 생각하는 그 조각들이 바로 자신의 나라라고 여기고 있는
그 민족들을 불쌍하게 여기십시오.
