생명에 대하여

And one　 spoke and said:
"Master, life has dealt bitterly with our hopes and our desires.
Our hearts are troubled, and we do not understand.
I pray you, comfort us, and open to us the meanings of our sorrows."

그러자 그들 중 한 사람이 말했다.
"스승이시여, 생명은 우리들의 희망과 욕망을 가혹하게 다루고 있습니다.
그래서 우리들의 가슴은 늘 근심으로 가득하고
우리는 왜 그런 일이 일어나는지 이해하지 못합니다.
간청하오니. 우리에게 그 슬픔의 의미를 밝혀주시어 우리에게 평안을 주십시오."

And his heart was moved with compassion, and he said:
"Life is older than all things living;
even as beauty was winged ere the beautiful was born on earth,
and even as truth was truth ere it was uttered.
"Life sings in our silences, and dreams in our slumber.
Even when we are beaten and low, Life is enthroned and high.
And when we weep, Life smiles upon the day,
and is free even when we drag our chains.

그러자 알무스타파의 마음은 연민으로 가득해 졌고 이렇게 말했다.

"생명은 살아있는 그 어떤 것보다 오래된 것이다.
그것은 마치 아름다움이
아름다운 것들이 이 땅위에 태어나기 전부터 날개를 가지고 있었던 것과 같고,
진리는 그것이 말해지기 전부터 진리였던 것과 같다.

생명은 우리들의 침묵 속에서 노래하고 우리들의 잠 속에서 꿈꾼다.
그리고 비록 우리가 지치고 기운을 잃었다 할지라도 생명은 고귀하고 높이 난다.
또한 생명은 우리가 눈물 흘릴 때도 그 날에 대해 미소지으며,
비록 우리가 쇠사슬에 묶여있더라도 생명은 자유롭다.

"Oftentimes we call Life bitter names,
but only when we ourselves are bitter and dark.
And we deem her empty and unprofitable,
but only when the soul goes wandering in desolate places,
and the heart is drunken with overmindfulness of self.

"흔히 우리는 생명은 가혹한 것이라고 말하지만,
하지만 그것은 오직 우리들 자신이 가혹하고 어두울 때에만 그런 것이다.
그리고 우리는 생명을 공허하고 덧없는 것이라고 여기지만
그것은 영혼이 황량한 곳을 배회하거나
사람들의 마음이 자아도취에 빠져있을 때에만 그런 것이다.

"Life is deep and high and distant;
and though only your vast vision can reach even her feet,
yet she is near;
and though only the breath of your breath reaches her heart,
the shadow of your shadow crosses her face,
and the echo of your faintest cry becomes a spring
and an autumn in her breast.

"생명은 깊고 높고 아득한 것이려니,
그러므로 비록 그대들의 시야가 아무리 넓다 할지라도
그것은 생명의 발끝에도 미치지 못한다.

그러나 생명은 가까이 있고,
그리고 비록 그대들이 내쉬는 숨결만이 그녀의 가슴에 닿고,
그대의 그림자의 그림자가 그녀의 얼굴에 드리워지고,
그대의 아주 연약한 부르짖음의 메아리가
그녀 가슴속에 봄이 되고 가을이 될지라도
생명은 언제나 너희 곁에 가까이 있는 것이다.

"And Life is veiled and hidden,
even as your greater self is hidden and veiled.
Yet when Life speaks, all the winds become words;
and when she speaks again,
the smiles upon your lips and the tears in your eyes turn also into words.
When she sings, the deaf hear and are held;
and when she comes walking, the sightless behold her
and are amazed and follow her in wonder and astonishment."

"생명은 베일에 가려지고 숨어있는 것이니,
그것은 마치 그대의 더 큰 자아가 숨겨지고 베일에 가려있는 것과 같다.
하지만 생명이 말을 할 때면 모든 바람들이 그녀의 말이 되고,
생명이 다시 말을 할 때면 그대의 입가에 떠오르는 미소와
그대 눈에서 흐르는 눈물이 모두 생명의 말로 변할 것이다.

생명이 노래부르면
귀머거리도 가슴을 열고 그 노래를 들을 수 있을 것이며,
생명이 우리에게 걸어올 때면 장님들도 그녀를 볼 수 있게 될 것이며
경이로움과 놀라움 속에서 즐거이 그녀 뒤를 따를 것이다."

And he ceased from speaking,
and a vast silence enfolded the people,
and in the silence there was an unheard song,
and they were comforted of their loneliness and their aching.

그렇게 알무스타파는 말하는 것을 마쳤다.
거대한 침묵이 사람들을 감쌌고,
그 침묵 속에서 귀로는 들리지 않는 노래가 흘렀다.
그렇게 그들의 외로움과 아픔은 위안을 얻었다.
