Sanjaya said: O King, Lord Krishna, as requested by Arjuna,
placed the best of all the chariots in the midst of the two armies;
산자야(Sanjaya)가 말하기를 :
왕이시여, 크리슈나(Krishna) 신께서 아르쥬나의 요청을 받아들이시어,
두 군대의 한 중간에 모든 전차 중 최고인 전차를 자리잡게 했습니다.

Facing Bheeshma, Drona, and all other Kings; and said to Arjuna:
Behold these assembled Kurus!
비슈마(Bheeshma)와 드로나(Drona) 그리고 모든 다른 왕들을 앞에 두고 ;
아르쥬나(Arjuna)에게 말하기를:
여기에 모여있는 쿠루족(Kurus)들을 보십시오!

There Arjuna saw his uncles, grandfathers, teachers,
maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, and comrades.
아르쥬나(Arjuna)는 자신의 삼촌들과 할아버지들, 선생들과 처가 쪽의 삼촌들,
형제들, 아들들과 손자들 그리고 친구들이 그곳에 있는 것을 보았습니다.

Seeing fathers-in-law, all those kinsmen,
and other dear one s standing in the ranks of the two armies,
직계와 모든 친인척들 그리고 다른 소중한 사람들이
두 군대 속에 줄을 지어 서 있는 것을 보면서.

Arjuna was overcome with great compassion and sorrowfully said:
O Krishna, seeing my kinsmen standing with a desire to fight,
My limbs fail and my mouth becomes dry.
My body quivers and my hairs stand on end.
아르쥬나(Arjuna)는 커다란 자비심에 잠겨 슬픔에 젖어 이렇게 말했습니다.
오, 크리슈나(Krishna) 신이시여,
내 친척들이 싸우려는 욕망에 사로잡혀 서있는 것을 보았을 때,
내 팔다리는 맥이 풀리고, 입이 타들어 가고,
몸이 떨리고 내 머리카락은 곤두섰습니다.
1-30.31
The bow, Gaandeeva, slips from my hand and my skin intensely burns.
My head turns, I am unable to stand steady and,
O Krishna, I see bad omens. I see no use of killing my kinsmen in battle.
내 활인 간디바(Gaandeeva)는 내 손으로부터 미끄러져 나가고,
내 살갗에는 뜨거운 불이 붙었습니다.
나는 고개를 돌려 외면했고 서 있을 수도 없는 지경에 이르렀습니다.
오, 크리슈나 신이시여, 저는 불길한 징조를 느끼고 있습니다.
이 전쟁에서 내 친족들을 죽이는 짓이 부질없는 짓이라는 것을 저는 압니다.

I desire neither victory nor pleasure nor kingdom, O Krishna.
What is the use of the kingdom, or enjoyment, or even life, O Krishna?
오, 크리슈나(Krishna)이시여,
저는 승리도 영광도 왕국도 모두 원하지 않습니다.
왕국이나 향락 그리고 생명조차 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?

Anvaya:
Translation:
Because all those, for whom we desire kingdom, enjoyments, and pleasures,
are standing here for the battle, giving up their lives and wealth.
우리가 왕국과 기쁨과 영광을 바라는 것은 모두 그들을 위함인데,
그들은 자신들의 생명과 재산을 버리고 여기 이 전쟁터에 서 있습니다.

Teachers, uncles, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law,
grandsons, brothers-in-law, and other relatives.
스승들, 삼촌들, 아들들, 할아버지들, 외가 쪽의 삼촌들, 친족들,
손자들, 형제들 그리고 다른 친인척들.

I do not wish to kill them, who are also about to kill,
even for the sovereignty of the three worlds,
let alone for this earthly kingdom, O Krishna.
오 크리슈나(Krishna)이시여, 저는 삼계(三界)의 통치권을 준다고 하더라도
차라리 제가 그들의 손에 죽임을 당할지언정 그들을 죽이려 할 수는 없습니다.
하물며 이 티끌같은 지상의 왕국을 위해서이겠습니까.

O Lord Krishna,
what pleasure shall we find in killing the sons of Dhritaraashtra?
Upon killing these felons we shall incur sin onl y.
오, 크리슈나(Krishna) 신이시여,
우리가 드리타라슈트라(Dhritaraashtra)의 아들들을 죽이고
무슨 즐거움을 얻을 수 있겠습니까?
이런 흉악한 무리들을 죽이는 것으로써 우리는 단지 죄만 지을 뿐입니다.

Therefore, we should not kill our brothers, the sons of Dhritaraashtra.
How can we be happy after killing our kinsmen, O Krishna?
그러므로 우리는 우리의 형제들인
드리타라슈트라(Dhritaraashtra)의 아들들을 죽이지 말아야 합니다.
오 크리슈나(Krishna)이시여,
우리가 우리의 친족들을 죽이고 나서 어떻게 행복해 질 수 있겠습니까?

Though they,
blinded by greed, do not see evil in the destruction of the family,
or sin in being treacherous to friends.
비록 그들이 탐욕에 눈이 멀었고,
가족을 파멸로 이끄는 악함에 대해 보지 못하고,
친구를 배반하는 행동이 죄라는 것을 몰랐다고 할지라도,

Why shouldn't we, who clearly see evil in the destruction of the family,
think about turning away from this sin, O Krishna?
오, 크리슈나(Krishna)이시여,
왜 이 죄로부터 돌이키려고 생각해서는 안됩니까?
가족을 파멸로 이끄는 것이 악한 것이라는 것을 분명히 알고 있는 우리가 말입니다.

With the destruction of the family,
the eternal family traditions are destroyed,
and immorality prevails due to the destruction of family traditions.
가족이 절멸되면, 끊임없이 지속되어온 가족도덕이 없어지게 되고,
가족 전통들의 파괴는 부도덕의 만연을 부르게 됩니다.

And when immorality prevails,
O Krishna, the women of the family become corrupted;
when women are corrupted, social problems arise.
오 크리슈나(Krishna)이시여,
그리고 부도덕이 만연하면, 가족의 여자들이 부정하게 되고,
여자들이 몸을 더렵히게되면 사회적 문제들이 일어나게 됩니다.

Translation:
This brings the family and the slayers of the family to hell,
because the spirits of their ancestors are degraded
when deprived of ceremonial offerings of rice-ball and water.
이런 일들은 그 가족과 그 가족을 파멸시킨 이들을
모두 지옥에 떨어지게 할 것입니다.
왜냐하면 떡과 물로 된 제사 음식을 더 이상 이 빼앗긴 받지 못하는
그들 조상의 영혼들이 퇴화하게 될 것이기 때문입니다.

The everlasting qualities of Varna and family traditions of those
who destroy their family are ruined by the sinful act of illegitimacy.
(Note: Varna means color, or the make up and the hue of mind;
a social division or order of society such as caste in India.)
그리하여 불합리한 죄의 행위로 가족들을 파멸시킨 자들로 인해,
영원한 특성인 각 가족마다의 고유한 색깔인 바르나(Varna)와
가족제도가 황폐해지게 될 것입니다.

Translation:
We have been told, O Krishna,
that people whose family traditions are destroyed necessarily
dwell in hell for a long time.
오 크리슈나(Krishna)이시여, 우리는 가족의 전통이 파괴된 사람들은
오랫동안 지옥 속에서 머무르게 된다고 들어왔습니다.

Alas! We are ready to commit a great sin by striving to slay our kinsmen
because of greed for the pleasures of the kingdom.
아 슬픕니다!
우리가 왕국의 영광을 위한 탐욕을 위해 우리의 동족들을 죽이려고 애쓸 때,
우리는 얼마나 큰 죄를 저지르려고 하고 있는 것일까요.

It would be far better for me if the sons of Dhritaraashtra should kill me
with their weapons in battle while I am unarmed and unresisting.
차라리 제가 아무런 무기도 들지 않고 저항도 없이,
'도드리타라슈트라' 아들들의 손에 죽을 수 있다면
그것이 저에게는 훨씬 더 나은 행복일 것입니다.

Sanjaya said:
Having said this in the battle field and casting aside his bow and arrow,
Arjuna sat down on the seat of the chariot
with his mind overwhelmed with sorrow.
산자야(Sanjaya)가 말하기를 :
전쟁터에서 이렇게 말하면서 아르쥬나(Arjuna)는
그의 활과 화살과 한 옆으로 던져버렸고,
슬픔으로 가득 찬 마음으로 전차 위에 앉아 있었습니다.
