 Others taught me with having knelt at well-curbs
Always wrong to the light, so never seeing
Deeper down in the well than where the water
Gives me back in a shining surface picture
Me myself in the summer heaven godlike
Looking out of a wreath of fern and cloud puffs. 

 

늘 빛을 등지고
우물가에 무릎을 꿇고 앉아
그 속을 들여다보고 있는 나를 보고
사람들은 이렇게들 말합니다.우물 속을 아무리 들여다 본다해도
보이는 것이라곤
우물 속의 이끼 다발과
뭉게 구름이 흘러가는 거룩한 여름 하늘과
반짝이는 수면에 반사되는
자기 자신의 영상 밖에 없을 텐데. 

 

Once, when trying with chin against a well-curb,
I discerned, as I thought, beyond the picture,
Through the picture, a something white, uncertain,
Something more of the depths--and then I lost it.
Water came to rebuke the too clear water.
One drop fell from a fern, and lo, a ripple
Shook whatever it was lay there at bottom,
Blurred it, blotted it out. What was that whiteness?
Truth? A pebble of quartz? For once, then, something.

 

그런데 우연히 한번은
우물가에 턱을 기대고 생각에 잠겨 있다가
뭔가 불분명한 것이, 하얀 어떤 것이
우물 속에 비친 영상 너머로, 영상 속에,
뭔가 깊이를 더하는 것을 보았습니다.
그러다가 잠시 후 나는 그것을 놓치고 말았습니다.
그것은 그 순간 물이 이끼를 시켜
물 한 방울이 떨어트리게 하여
물이 너무 맑다고 꾸짖으러 왔기 때문이었습니다.
그렇게 하여 떨어진 그 물 한 방울은 파문을 일으켜
그곳에 있던 모든 것을 바닥에서부터 흔들어 놓아,
영상을 흐릿하게 하고, 번져 사라지게 해버렸습니다.
그때 그 하얀 것이 무엇이었을까요?
진리였을까요? 수정 조각이었을까요?
그때 꼭 한번 본 그것이.
