Almustafa, the chosen and the beloved,
who was a noon unto his own day,
returned to the isle of his birth in the month of Tichreen,
which is the month of remembrance.
선택받은 사람이고 사랑받는 사람인 알무스타파,
인생의 절정기에 이른 그는,
회상(回想)의 달인 티치렌의 달에 그가 태어난 섬으로 돌아왔다.
And as his ship approached the harbour,
he stood upon its prow, and his mariners were about him.
And there was a homecoming in his heart.
그리고 그의 배가 항구에 가까워지자,
그는 뱃머리에 섰고, 선원들은 그의 주위에 몰려들었다.
그리고 그의 가슴은 고향에 돌아온 감회로 가득했다.
And he spoke, and the sea was in his voice, and he said:
"Behold, the isle of our birth.
Even here the earth heaved us, a song and a riddle;
a song unto the sky, a riddle unto the earth;
and what is there between earth and sky
that shall carry the song and solve the riddle save our own passion?
그리고 그는 말을 시작했고,
그의 목소리에는 바다가 담겨 있었다.
"보라. 우리가 태어난 섬을,
여기서도 대지는 노래와 수수께끼로 우리를 높이 들어 올리는구나.
하늘에 닿는 노래, 땅까지 이르는 수수께끼로..
그런데 우리들 자신의 열망을 제외하고는
땅과 하늘 사이에서 노래를 실어 나르고 수수께끼를 풀게 될 그 무엇이 있겠는가?
"The sea yields us once more to these shores.
We are but another wave of her waves.
She sends us forth to sound her speech,
but how shall we do so
unless we break the symmetry of our heart on rock and sand?
바다는 다시 한번 우리를 이 바닷가로 데려다 주었고
우리는 큰 바다의 물결속에 또 하나의 작은 물결에 지나지 않노라.
바다는 자신의 말을 전하기 위해 우리를 밀어 올리지만,
우리가 우리 마음의 조화를 바위와 모래에 부딪혀 깨뜨리지 않는다면,
우리가 어떻게 그 말을 전할 수 있을 것인가?
"For this is the law of mariners and the sea:
If you would freedom, you must needs turn to mist.
The formless is for ever seeking form,
even as the countless nebulae would become suns and moons;
and we who have sought much and return now to this isle, rigid moulds,
we must become mist onc e more and learn of the beginning.
And what is there that shall live and rise unto the heights
except it be broken unto passion and freedom?
왜냐하면 이것이 뱃사람과 바다의 법칙이기에...
만일 그대가 자유로워질 마음이 있다면,
그대는 자신이 안개로 변하기를 원하리라.
그러나 마치 무수한 성운(星雲)조차도 해가 되고 달이 되기를 원하는 것처럼,
형태가 없는 것들은 영원히 형태를 가지기를 간절히 원한다.
그리고 많은 것을 추구하다가 고정된 삶의 틀 속에서 살기 위해서
지금 이 섬으로 되돌아온 우리들은
다시 한번 안개가 되어 시작하는 것을 배워야 한다.
그리하여 우리가 살아 남아서
열정과 자유로 상심하고 부서지는 것 외에
그 높이에까지 날아 올라갈 그 무엇이 거기에 있겠는가?
"For ever shall we be in quest of the shores,
that we may sing and be heard.
But what of the wave that breaks where no ear shall hear?
It is the unheard in us that nurses our deeper sorrow.
Yet it is also the unheard
which carves our soul to form and fashion our destiny."
우리는 노래하고 우리의 노래를 들려주기 위해 언제나 이 바닷가를 찾으리라.
그러나 들어줄 사람 하나 없는 곳에서 부서져 사라지는 그 파도들은 어떠하겠는가?
하지만 우리의 보다 깊은 슬픔을 치유해 주는 것도
우리들 속에 있는 우리가 아직 알아듣지 못한 그 소리이며,
우리들의 영혼을 형상을 가진 모습으로 조각하고
우리들의 운명을 만들어 주는 것도
여전히 그 들을 수 없는 그 소리인 것이다."
Then one of his mariners came forth and said:
"Master, you have captained our longing for this harbour,
and behold, we have come.
Yet you speak of sorrow, and of hearts that shall be broken."
그러자 그의 선원중 한 사람이 앞으로 나서서 말했다.
"스승이시여,
당신은 우리의 갈망을 달래주시려고 우리를 이 항구로 인도하셨습니다.
그리고 마침내 우리는 돌아왔습니다.
하지만 여전히 당신은 슬픔을 말씀하시고
상심(傷心)할 가슴에 대해서 말씀하십니다."
And he answered him and said:
"Did I not speak of freedom, and of the mist which is our greater freedom?
Yet it is in pain I make pilgrimage to the isle where i was born,
even like unto a ghost of one slain come to kneel
before those who have slain him."
그러자 그가 대답하여 말했다.
"나는 자유에 대해서 그리고 우리의 보다 큰 자유인 안개에 대해 말했노라.
그리고 나에게는 지금도 내가 태어난 이 섬을 순례하는 일이 고통이기도 하노라.
그것은 마치 살해당한 사람의 유령이
자신을 살해한 자들 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 앉기 위해 온 것과 같으니라."
And another mariner spoke and said:
"Behold, the multitudes on the sea-wall.
In their silence they have foretold
even the day and the hour of your coming,
and they have gathered
from their fields and vineyards in their loving need, to await you."
그리고 또 다른 선원이 이렇게 말했다.
"보십시오. 저 방파제 위의 군중들을.
그들은 침묵속에서 당신이 돌아올 날짜와 시간까지도 미리 말해왔으며,
당신이 오기를 고대하면서
그들의 간절한 소망을 품고 들판과 포도밭을 몰려들었습니다."
And Almustafa looked afar upon the multitudes,
and his heart was mindful of their yearning, and he was silent.
그러자 알무스타파는 저 멀리 모여든 군중들을 바라보았고
그의 마음속은 그들의 그리움에 대한 생각으로 가득하였다.
그리고 그는 묵묵히 침묵을 지키고 있었다.
